Lady Freedom [#40]

This is the first of a series of illustrations that commemorates different monuments of Washington DC. It features the Statue of Freedom that stands on top of the Capitol, looking east. The sculpture, designed by Thomas Crawford, was later completed by Philip Reid. Reid began the work as a slave, but in a historical twist, he finished it shortly after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation – and thus, was himself a free man.
