Independence Avenue [#74]

Countless buses full of tourists (and the desperate commuters behind them) pass by Independence Avenue SW each day. Built in 1930, the roadway along the mall was planned to be wide and modern. This illustration looks west, with the Washington Monument and one of the skyways linking both buildings of the Department of Agriculture in the background. In the foreground, a work-bound woman changes her shoes next to a hot-dog stand.
